this album is dedicated to death. i don't mean death the spectre that installs horror and fear in many (in the western world), nor death the enemy of the (western) for-profit medical system, but death as part of a cycle, like birth. death the only certainty in life. dying, like living, as something that can be done well - or not. death also something that can be a release, a relief, a liberation, the end of suffering, a freedom.
this album is inspired by my father's illness, deterioration and death, and my being his carer for the 15 last months of his life. recording this album started 6 months into that journey, from October 2020 on.
it was my father's wish to die at home, and my siblings and i granted him that wish.
the album was sent off to press early June 2021, when my father died.
"When performing with a limited set of resources, through choices in materials to work with and the constraints of being nomadic, there can be a tendency to repeat actions and scenes that 'work', even when improvising and having to respond to each new situation in a unique way."
One characteristic aspect of the touring experience that is not discussed often enough is the dilemma of repetition. Not repetition as a mechanism of the work itself, but as a tedious consequence of being obligated to perform night after night in quick succession. Generating a completely unique performance for each stop, even with the assistance of improvisation, is a laborious undertaking that consumes too much time and sanity, while adhering to a rigid set of rules leaves one open to both burnout and diminishing returns. Is there a way to split the difference so that both performer and audience are always engaged to the highest standard?
"I set these constraints on myself. The need to produce something (at least a little) different in each event of a tour was fierce, especially when traveling with other musicians."
Explicitly within the title itself of his latest CD, Forced To Repeat Myself, UK sound artist and composer Simon Whetham tackles these questions with both a sly wit and sincere inquisitiveness. The tracks, all collected from recordings documenting a 2018 tour, utilize analogous source material and means of execution. Whetham paid particular attention to the contour and character of each venue when deciding how to best put the pieces together, offering a customization that subverts pure deja vu for a sharp observance of the unfamiliar.
"In each situation objects and materials unique to the space were incorporated into the performance setup and structure, generating sounds or resonating with them. And yet I could hear similar scenes, movements, even spaces. This repetition determined the dynamic of the composition, working with it and against it."
By the very nature of their disseminating sparseness, the tracks of Forced To Repeat Myself demand from the listener an attentiveness fixed on nuance and variation. The amplified cracks and static of ethereal currents and anonymous electronics infer the works of others who’ve made it their mission to attune our attention toward sounds outside our natural perception, including Christina Kubisch's electrical walks, Toshimaru Nakamura's no-input mixer excursions, and Jason Zeh's experiments with blank tapes and the mechanizations of his cassette players. Whetham's shaping of the album's source material to highlight certain exclusivities of each live performance emphasizes how the inherent dynamics of time and chance guide his self-imposed constraints into pathbreaking spectrums.
"The title references a phrase many of us will have heard in our formative years, 'Why do you force me to repeat myself?' I have no answer to this question. I never forced anyone to do anything. But with this work, I did."
One inherent paradox of Forced To Repeat Myself is that each listen naturally manifests a distinct, individual experience. The way sounds are received and processed in one instance to the next each forget their own entryway into transcribing meaning from this abstraction. And Whetham is keenly aware of this as the sounds of Forced To Repeat Myself find consistent, unique ways to perpetuate themselves, ensuring any repetition to be delicately understated.

Joe Colley "Psychic Stress Soundtracks" 2xLP
First time vinyl pressing of Joe Colley's Prix Ars Electronica award winning album. Mastered for vinyl by Giuseppe Ielasi and pressed across 2 LPs, packaged in gatefold jacket with expanded artwork.
For those that gave up too soon.
Failure, self-loathing and abject monstrosity continue unabated as the primary themes for Joe Colley's electro-shock minimalism. As with his previous, equally impressive Desperate Attempts At Beauty, he shifts through a seemingly endless supply of antiquated electric gear and forces these dilapidated machines to grind, crush, whirl and twist under conditions they were not originally designed for. On Psychic Stress Soundtracks, Colley astutely transcribes the machines' smouldering march to oblivion, granting them the emphatic capacity for pain and the recognition of existential despair. The ozone smell of melting circuity lingers above the nervous Geiger counter clicks and toxic hums of his electric dynamos. Colley is a gifted, if sometimes under-appreciated composer whose successes rely upon the manifestation of the paradox of building something extraordinary out of junk.
-Jim Haynes (the Wire)
Joe Colley (b.1972 Ft. Lauderdale Florida USA) is a self taught artist concerned primarily with the phenomena of sound and it's unique ability to activate a consciousness set apart from rational understanding in a way very different from visual or verbal means. This consuming interest has led to extensive experimentation with results occasionally made public through performances, installations, and commercially available recordings. These experiments have encompassed abstract electronic/noise composition, amplification of natural phenomena, investigations into phase, and creation of complex mass from layers of simplistic sound material, often exploring limits of audibility and equipment malfunction/misuse with special attention to the mundane or pathetic. Growing up among the thrift stores and junk shops of California's central valley, Colley has in recent years travelled widely making field recordings and performances. At various times he has worked in warehouses, long-term care facilities, porn shops, and as an art instructor with developmentally disabled adults and juvenile detention facility inmates.
He has participated in festivals including Activating The Medium (SFMOMA), Observatori (Valencia, Spain), LUFF (Lausanne, Switzerland), Lampo (Chicago, Illinois), Phonotaktik (Vienna, Austria), MUTEK (Montreal, Canada), Beyond Music (Venice, Ca.), and Songlines (Mills College, Oakland, Ca.).
His notable recordings include "Desperate Attempts At Beauty: Conceptual And Research Exercises" (Auscultare Research CD - nominated for the Transmediale 05 Award), "Waste of Songs" (ORAL CD), "No Way In" (Glistening Examples LP) and "Psychic Stress Soundtracks" (Antifrost CD) which received an award of distinction at Ars Electronica upon its release in 2006.
Mark Vernon "An Annotated Phonography of Chance" LP
"An Annotated Phonography of Chance" expands upon the soundtrack to an uncompleted 16mm film made in collaboration with English filmmaker Martha Jurksaitis and the Portuguese artist duo Von Calhau! The film "Nossos Ossos" was shot largely on location in the Alentejo region of Portugal in 2013.
Mark Vernon is a Glasgow-based artist whose work exists on the fringes of sound art, music and broadcasting.
At the core of his practice lies a fascination with the intimacy of the radio voice, environmental sound, obsolete media and the re-appropriation of found recordings. He incorporates these diverse elements into radiophonic compositions for broadcast, fixed media and live performances.
A keen advocate of radio as an art form, he was a founding member of Glasgow's Radio Tuesday collective and has gone on to set up several other RSL art radio projects in the UK including Hair Waves, Nowhere Island Radio and most recently, Glasgow's Radiophrenia. He has produced programmes internationally for stations including Resonance FM, VPRO, Sound Art Radio, Radio Revolten, Deutschland Radio Kultur, Radio Cona, Kunstradio, Wavefarm, RADIA, EBU and the BBC.
Since 2011 he has co-run Lights Out Listening Group - a bi-monthly listening event focused on creative uses of sound and radio that takes place in complete darkness.
His solo and collaborative music projects have been published through labels including Kye, Staalplaat, Ultra Eczema, Entr'acte, 3Leaves, Staubgold and Gagarin Records, as well as a series of small CDR and LP editions on his own Meagre Resource imprint.

Francisco Meirino "The Ruins" CD
From the ruins of hours of multi-channel recordings created during his residency at EMS Stockholm, Francisco Meirino has created a definitive statement of time and discovery.
Inspired by the Serge and Buchla modular synthesizers, he felt as if he were standing before ancient ruins, familiar yet unknown. After allowing these recordings to sit and decay over time, he discovered, when he finally came back to them, that all that was left were the pieces and ruins of sonic archives.
The end result is a masterpiece statement, an exercise in abandonment and discovery.
The ruins Francisco Meirino has unearthed reach deep into our psyche from seemingly the most unlikely source, machines, evoking a story of damage and resurrection.
Peter J. Woods "Today Is Horrible" CD
Recorded between 2014 and 2018, Today is Horrible chronicles the sonic elements from six different performance pieces written and performed by Woods during that time. Although these recordings rely on Woods’ usual palette of sounds (sine waves, crumbling static, obscured text, stretches of silence, etc), TiH reorganizes those elements into a powerful and haunting collection of deceptively straightforward compositions that only reveal themselves after multiple listens. The album touches on a number of different socially charged themes, ranging from the failure of political change within unwavering social paradigms to the construction of whiteness within media, that remain connected through an unwavering critical stance towards the modern social condition. However, these notions remain submerged under crushing walls of distortion, heavy synth drones, and barely whispered vocals, only coalescing for those with the patience to revisit the work on multiple occasions.
Andrea Borghi "VHS" LP
Reflecting the artist's passion for cinema, VHS consists of audio recordings that were produced through an openVHS Recorder using manipulated videotapes. Most source sound is taken from background parts edited from old tapes of obscure and underground cinema. Mechanical memories and the suggestions of past cinematographic sets are converted and re-contextualized in order to explore the expressive possibilities of an archaic media.
Mastered by Giuseppe Ielasi, released in a limited edition of 100 LPs packaged in deluxe tip-on gatefold jackets.

Seers "From the beginning...until
the End" CD
In 2004-2005 Pete Swanson and Gerritt Wittmer formed the group Seers in
Oakland, California. They played a handful of shows (including at the
famed Il Corral in Los Angeles) and recorded several studio sessions.
This work was planned to be released on a now-defunct imprint
and was shelved following the labels dissolve. Despite the passing of
several years, the value of this collaborative work has endured.
Destined to undergo a journey and be resurrected on the other side. An
exercise in time, challenging communication and the transfer of energy.
Seers literally and intentionally incorporated the ability to
"transfer energy" during improvisations via developing instrumentation
that allowed one player to influence the other's sound through direct
routing. Much of the music is built on various feedback loops and other
chains of chance.
This is tape music, this is drone music, this is psychic
music, this is spiritual music. Like the sound of the universe,
undulating and folding unto itself, filled with transference and
decadent illusion.
Here now in its original entirety is Seers "From the
beginning...until the End."
100 copies of the album will include a bonus disc "Live
Testament", recorded at Il Corral, Los Angeles by Damion Romero.
Gerritt Wittmer is a sound and performance artist based in
Oakland, California. He is in the band Names and curates the
Misanthropic Agenda imprint.
Pete Swanson is a musician currently based in Brooklyn, New
York. His most recent work includes "Punk Authority" on Software and
"Man With Potential" and "Pro Style" on Type Records, which all vaguely
resemble severely corroded dance music. He was formerly a member of the
psychedelic noise/drone act Yellow Swans.
Its an excerpt of a track off of: Gerritt Wittmer "Making

Seitz Versus Gendreau "S/T" LP
Seitz Versus Gendreau is a collaborative experiment in using concrete
music compositional strategies.
These pieces were composed with created and found sound captured in San
Francisco.
Chorus After Rains: A strategy where we each use the same raw
sound clips with different results. The two pieces are then melded to
create one piece of music, the different modules becoming inseparable
from
each other.
Things Lost That Will Never Be Found: A composition with
live instruments, moving from a toy piano to various invented motor
instruments; a piece that transitions from melody to noise.
Trains Will Not Stop: Another Grand Surface Noise opera (Nr.
9), using the various sounds from records, composed by Gendreau and
re-mixed by Seitz using accelerometer recordings collected in San
Francisco during 2005.
SEITZ, based in Oakland, California and formerly a member of
Taxodiaceae, makes a rare foray into recording. Seitz is fascinated by
the re-contextualization of ephemeral sound such as- streams from
radio, lost and forgotten records, tangents of passing conversation,
fragmented voicemails, pieces of cassettes sound, field recordings by
amateurs, tv movie themes, and random and despised podcasts- and the
breakdown of the music bubble that surrounds most contemporary music
consumers. Seitz envisions a world where listeners actually listen and
no music is fetishized.
GENDREAU has composed and performed solo, as well as in
several group configurations since 1979. His former group Crawling With
Tarts (1983-1998) used ideas revolving around elementalism and
pre-language states. Gendreau has elaborated on these ideas while
adding concepts based on his studies in physics, philosophies attending
to temporal and environmental persistence, applications of parataxis,
and experiments with small motors and turntable mechanisms. His
performances have involved sounds from one-off transcription discs cast
by others in the middle of the last century, and those cut in his
studio using a decrepit lathe. More recently, Gendreau has sought to
extend these later studies, and to use buildings as a speaker. He
records the infrasonic vibrations of the performance space and in the
concert, he uses the structure's resonances as an additional instrument
in his site-specific compositions. These practices are based in part on
his current work as an acoustician, working primarily on low-vibration
and noise design for buildings.
Released in a limited edition of 90 copies, packaged in
deluxe tip-on jacket.
Vertonen
"HACE/26,250' b/w 11° 22.4'N 142° 35.5'E" LP
The audio on this LP was inspired by early efforts to explore extreme
locations on earth, and the clash between the will of humans, the
limits of their bodies, and the immutable laws of the natural world-the
latter which can easily destroy both of the first two.
The 11° 22.4'N 142° 35.5'E" side is based on the 1960 dive by
Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh in the bathyscaphe Trieste to the
Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, the deepest known point on earth.
This side aims to mirror the combination of analytic
scientific preparation and calibration that the team did and the
inherent and unavoidable human concern of "if something goes wrong,
there's a good chance we could die."
The HACE/26,250' side was inspired by research on High
Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE), a condition where oxygen is not getting
to the brain.
HACE has the greatest potential for striking in the Dead
Zone, (26,250 feet), where available oxygen cannot sustain human life
for more that 3 hours. Of course, for someone aiming to summit Mt
Everest, there are "only" 2,750 feet remaining-and, the person still
has to descend back through the Dead Zone. With their goal so closely
in reach, a climber may sacrifice the rational (saving their life) for
the sake of achieving their goal (summiting Everest).
HACE/26,250' is a soundtrack for a body closing down; heart
rates slowing, blood flow slowing, everything once moist and carrying
life slowly becoming brittle, dry, and unable to function due to duress.
Vertonen is Blake Edwards and devices-for this LP, the
primary device is a Russian Polivoks synthesizer. Based in Chicago,
Illinois, Edwards has performed at numerous festivals in the US, as
well as toured the US and Japan. In addition to numerous 7" records, 3"
CDRs, full-length CDRs, and split 12" records, Vertonen also has
released three CDs funded by City of Chicago grants (as is this
record).
This is a split label release with C.I.P.

Giuseppe Ielasi "15 More Tapes" LP Francisco Meirino, Kam Hassah,
Alleypisser, Gerritt Wittmer & Paul Knowles "Unifying Themes" LP
April
19th, 2011
We are absolutely thrilled to announce these 2 new releases.
Firstly, if you have not heard Francisco Meirino before (or
his old moniker Phroq) please take note. (and crawl out from under
rock) He has been creating soundworks for more than a decade and this
new FM LP is definitely some of his best work. This is a very nice
edition that will not be around for long.
Second, I cant believe it, after well more than 5 years from
the start of this project, Lasse Marhaug and Francisco Meirino deliver
some conceptual masterwork headfuck in the form of a 7 inch. So
insanely cut by Rashad Becker at D & M in Berlin. Yes, please
listen to this at both 33 and 45 rpm. Quite possibly the longest
playing 7 inch ever.
Francisco Meirino
"Recordings of voltage errors, magnetic fields, on-site testimonies
& tape tension" LP
On "Recordings of voltage errors, magnetic fields, on-site testimonies
& tape tension" Francisco Meirino continues to explore his
curiosity of failed sounds and field recordings.
Using computer, reel to reel tape machine, analog synth, field
recorder, various home electronics, piezo transducers and
electro-magnetic sensors, Francisco stitches together a brilliant mix
of electronics and acoustic sounds.
With this release he shows maturity and compositional craftsmanship
that is clearly some of his best work to date.
Pressed in a limited edition of 90.
Lasse Marhaug & Francisco
Meirino "Flupentixol/Lamotrigine" 7"
After more than 5 years in the making, Lasse Marhaug (Jazzkamer) and
Francisco Meirino (Phroq) have created an aural equivalent to a hyper
manic mental break down and the flip side, a chronic depressive crash.
Two tracks, each named after popular pharmaceuticals used to treat the
symptoms contained within.
This medication can be taken at both 33 and 45 rpm. Mastered and Cut by
Rashad Becker. Pressed in a limited edition of 500 on clear vinyl in
prescription packaging.

Gerritt Wittmer "Vessel" LP
Vessel: a sonic narrative. Through physical confinement and isolation a
threshold is penetrated and a vast new world is suddenly accessible.
Pressed in a limited edition of 200 copies housed in a deluxe tip-on
jacket.
Not Breathing / Vesica Piscis
"Desert" 7"
Not Breathing showcases the debilitating August heat and blinding
mirages of the Sonoran Desert.
Vesica Piscis serves a recipe of high altitude, low humidity, clear
air, strong winds, snowcapped peaks, Ponderosa Pines and frequent
wildfires.
These recordings feature several thousand species of drought-tolerant
native plants representative of the desert regions.
Limited edition of 150.
Francisco Meirino & Dave
Phillips "We Are None of Us" CD
Francisco Meirino (phroq) & Dave Phillips (schimpfluch gruppe) have
collaborated on this extremely dynamic electro-acoustic studio album.
Through meticulous arrangement of electronics, processed sound and
field recordings they create a dark and unsettling audio narrative. "We
Are None of Us" exemplifies these two masters at the best of their
craft.
Limited edition of 300 packaged in digipack. Split released with Domizil in Switzerland.
Gerritt Wittmer & Paul Knowles

Sissy Spacek "15-Tet Oakland" CD
A historic line-up, featuring players from all over the northern
California musical underground: Mitchell Brown (Gasp,
Professor Cantaloupe), George Chen (KIT), Vice Cooler (KIT),
Paul Costuros (Death Sentence: Panda!, Total Shutdown), Chris
Dixon (DS:P!), Tony Dryer, Jacob Heule (Etteric), Loachfillet
(Caroliner), Kanoko Nishi, Gino Robair, Corydon Ronnau,
Amanda Warner (0th, MNDR), Kim West (DS:P!), John Wiese,
and Gerritt Wittmer (Deathroes). Since the inception of the
band Sissy Spacek in 1999 by core members John Wiese
and Corydon Ronnau, the primary focus has been on small
tight groups playing small tight music. The first large ensemble
was a 13-Tet in Los Angeles (documented on the California
Ax 4xCD set released by Helicopter) which was guided by a
graphic score. The two sets (and encore) in this documentation
are a collective improvisation based on simple instructions
recorded at 21 Grand in Oakland, California.
Limited edition of 300 packaged in full color digipak.

PlaySpace exhibition
Graduate Gallery, San Francisco campus

According to one 17th-century physician, hysteria was "the most
common of diseases except fevers" and became the most
frequently diagnosed disease in history. This multimedia
installation explores portrayals of hysterical women from film
and television history. A broad range of source materials will
craft the perfect chamber of suffering that will strike a dark
familiarity with anyone who has grown up with these images
from the American media.

August
6, 2002 Note: If you have placed a distro
order or made an attempt to contact Misanthropic Agenda as of late and
are experiencing delays, please know that Gerritt is currently in
Alaska and will not be back home for at least another week. Having gone
to Alaska for a family funeral, Gerritt suffered a collapsed lung and
had to undergo surgery last week to attempt to repair the damage. So
far things are looking good, but he has had very limited access to the
internet while in Alaska, and has obviously been very ill and in a
great deal of pain, thus being unable to stay in contact with several
people. Hopefully things will be relatively "back to normal" by the end
of the month, but please be patient if you are waiting for a package or
an email response - rest assured you will get it. Thanks.
